See the artwork here! This cover was mainly designed by Tina, although I did a bit of layout and text because she was busy. Mp3 at the bottom.

This is possibly the first in a series of cute little 3" CD EPs. In mid-February I was looking for ideas for stuff to do for Tina's birthday. At the time my brother's band PTA had a huge stack of 3" CDs downstairs which they were burning and distributing as samples, and I hit on the idea of recording such a CD for Tina and doing it in a cute little package. That CD was a 5-song EP of covers of contrmporary pop songs under the MFO umbrella, but it inspired me to do an Enough Rope EP. It's been about two years since I did an EP, I was and still am in love with the album format, especially since the primary use for my music is to soundtrack my own journeys to and from work. My first idea was to do an extended version of 'Broken Song' from the album I'd done a week or two earlier, but somehow I ended up doing this bit of sprawling, detuned improv.

I'd decided it was gonna just be a one-track EP, and this song is mostly improvised. I'd put down a track, play it back and then record the next line over it. Very little was dropped or took more than one take, so it ended up with a nice loose sound and lots of rough edges instead of nicely honed melodies. Given that though, it's pretty accessible, with the exception perhaps of the first 3 minutes which has a two-string riff with one string being pulled in and out of tune to create a sense of unease. After that it's mostly a fairly dreamy journey through another 18 minutes of droning and reasonably experimental fun. So there!

I did realise retrospectively that the title promises rather more than it can ever hope to deliver, and for that I'm sorry. No elements of Canadian IDM mentalist Venetian Snares' music are contained herein. Rather, the title comes from a strange dream I had where my retired next-door neighbour Harry (who died last year) was revealed to have a secret past as a molester of young girls. Armed with this knowledge (it wasn't established in the dream whether the story was true or false), a gang of neighbours set about beating the shit out of him, one of whom was understood in the dream to be Aaron Funk aka Venetian Snares. I think other musicians were involved. But not Enough Rope of course...we were horrified.
